What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. It involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the skin or applying various other techniques to the acupuncture points to restore balance and encourage the body to heal itself. When performed by a skilled practitioner, acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of disorders. The treatment can be effective even if you don’t believe in the underlying philosophy. Your acupuncturist may use other techniques including: cupping – suction designed to bring blood to the acupuncture point Chinese herbs – either mixed by the acupuncturist or in pre-prepared tablet or granulated form TCM remedial massage – techniques applied to specific acupuncture points or meridians moxibustion – burning herbs held over or applied to acupuncture points.

Other Services

What is Dit Da Massage?

Dit Da literally translates to “Hit Fall” and describes the types of injuries that this method of natural healing practiced throughout history by martial arts clubs is able to treat. It is a hands on style of treatment that some of my clients have commented as being similar to deep tissue massage. This knowledge gets passed down from master to student if the student shows an aptitude and ability to understand the concepts and functions of the treatments provided, but also has become advanced enough in their martial training to be able to understand the body’s mechanisms and functions to provide the treatments safely and effectively. We encourage your body to use it’s own innate healing ability through stimulating the flow of blood and Qi with manual working of the injured areas and the use of traditional herbal liniments such as Dit Da Jow (Hit Fall Wine), medicated plasters and herbal poultices.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a treatment that has been used for a number of ailments for thousands of years. Over the centuries, cupping techniques and styles have often been influenced by their geographical location, as well as by the materials used in that area: animal horns, bamboo, ceramic, glass, metal, and plastic have all been used in this procedure. It is a practice in which the therapist puts special cups on the skin to create suction. This causes the tissue beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell causing increase in blood flow to affected area. Enhanced blood flow under the cups draws impurities and toxins away from the nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice in which a special tool is used to scrape the skin in order to produce light petechiae. Practitioners believe that gua sha releases unhealthy bodily matter from blood stasis within sore, tired, stiff, or injured muscle areas to stimulate new oxygenated blood flow to the areas, thus promoting metabolic cell repair, regeneration, healing, and recovery. Gua Sha involves repeated pressed strokes over lubricated skin with a smooth-edged, blunt instrument. your skin is lubricated with massage oil or balm, and traditionally a ceramic Chinese soup spoon was used, or a blunt, well-worn coin. Modern practice tends to favor honed plastic or metal, water buffalo horn, or jade.
